Oceanside pedestrians face a significant, two-and-a-half-month detour starting Monday, July 6, as the westbound Mission Avenue sidewalk over Interstate 5 (I-5) closes for a major infrastructure upgrade. The closure begins at 6 a.m. and will last until September 28. This work is a critical component of a joint project by Caltrans District 11 and the City of Oceanside to realign and enhance the I-5/Mission Avenue interchange. The project will impact daily commutes and access for many local residents, as the interchange serves as a vital link between neighborhoods east of the freeway and Oceanside's bustling coastal corridor and downtown area.

During the closure, pedestrians will use the eastbound Mission Avenue sidewalk, detouring between San Diego Street and Pirates Cove. Crews will complete Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements. These include reconstructing sidewalks and upgrading curb ramps on and near the overpass. This strategic upgrade aims to improve traffic operations and enhance safety.
